Synopsis

An undercover agent for a secret-branch of the U.S. military is traumatized by too many missions and told that he's now going to be an instructor. "You can finally be yourself." But after having assumed two hundred false identities, he no longer understands who he is. Finally, he reverts to an identity he assumed six years earlier. When a "help me" message arrives from a female agent with whom he worked at the time, he sets out to save her life. Tracking the most devastating enemy he has ever encountered, he races through a sinister labyrinth of intrigue to a shattering rendezvous with fate. Assumed Identity not only offers non-stop action and fascinating characters, but asks provocative questions about our own identities as well.

Backstory

Assumed Identity is filled with authentic undercover-operator details that I learned from a former member of U.S. military intelligence, the real "Brendan Buchanan." The book is dedicated to one of his pseudonyms.  The secret missions in Central America (Yellow Fruitfor example) are real. I planned to write a second book about this character and left a slight plot thread dangling to lead me into the next book, but then a mid-1990s television series The Pretender debuted, with a similar “assumed identity” premise, and I was forced to discontinue my plan for a second novel.

Praise

“The creator of Rambo and author of the bestselling The Fifth Profession has not lost his touch; this is a thrill-a-minute adventure novel…with all the action of a James Bond adventure and just a dash of the melancholy of John le Carré.”
Publishers Weekly

“A super dazzler in a class of its own. It not only thrills but haunts one’s memory for a very long time.”
Associated Press

“Prime Morrell, with the kind of nonstop action and intriguing plot twists we’ve come to expect from the author . . . impossible to put down . . . a must-read for anyone who enjoys a fine thriller.”
